Lanzarote’s capital is Arrecife, a smallish town with a harbour which was built in the 18th century. It has a pedestrian shopping precinct, restaurants and bars, and two forts – Castillo de San Gabriel, and Castillo de San Jose which is a little further up the coast.

Prior to Arrecife becoming the capital in 1852, Teguise was the main town. Situated inland, it has a large tourist market on Sundays, but little else.

The best beach on the island is in Puerto del Carmen. Six kilometres of golden sand, with a long promenade on one side and shops on the other. This is the place for scuba diving, deep sea fishing or horse-riding.

Costa Teguise is the main tourist town on Lanzarote – a low rise resort, pleasant little beaches and some good restaurants.
The premier tourist attraction is Timanfaya National Park and the Montanas del Fuego. The fire mountains are where the Restaurant del Diablo cooks most of their dishes on a BBQ heated by the volcano underneath.

The Jardin de los Cactus houses over 1400 varieties of cacti – amazing garden, well set out. Nearby are the Cuevas (caves) de los Verdos and Jameos del Agua where the lake is home to thousands of tiny,blind, white crabs.

There is a wonderful wide white sandy beach at the southern tip of the island, called Playa del Papagayo, and nearby is the pretty little fishing port of Playa Blanca. Here is the ideal place to enjoy the local fish restaurants.
