The island of Kefalonia is the largest and most mountainous of the Ionian islands and situated off the coast of Greece in the Mediterranean sea. It has a mild climate, with temperatures averaging 14 degrees C in winter and averaging 32 degrees C in summer. However, the evenings in winter can be quite chilly and swimming during the day is only for the hardy!

The north coast of the islands has small pebbly bays, while the south coast has wide sandy beaches and is home to the marine turtles. The capital is Argostoli, but much of its history has been lost due to the earthquake in 1953 which destroyed many of the buildings. All over the island, the cuisine is very good, but the best places to eat are where the locals dine.

The island boasts a good road network and one of the best ways to explore the island is by hire car. Drive through the olives groves and quaint fishing villages to the caves and marvel at the multicoloured stalactites and stalagmites, or visit the castles and beautiful churches, or relax by a lakeside and watch the sun go down.

Besides sunbathing and swimming, Kefalonia is a fantastic place for scuba diving, horse riding and sailing, and the islands of Lefkas, Zante and Ithaca are just a ferry ride away and are good places to explore.
