1. Set a budget

Villas vary wildly in price from the basic to the very luxurious. Its important to set a budget before you start searching so that you only look for villas you can afford (and don't get carried away!).

2. Deciding where you want to go

This can be a tricky one. First decide on the "destination", be it Portugal, Spain, Italy or the USA. Then you can decide on the resort by looking at what's available locally (be it a beach or mountain holiday), sightseeing choices or whatever takes your fancy.

3. Choose the facilities you want

4. Choose the right sized villa

Think about the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you'll need on your villa holiday and check whether any beds are sofa beds. Is it going to be practical for a party member to sleep on a sofa?

5. Cooking

Villa holidays are more often than not self catering so try and find out how big the kitchen is if you're planning on doing a lot of cooking (although most villas will be suitable for your needs).
